Introduction

Updated: May 29, 2023

Welcome to our blog, which is about the construction of our home. It will be an ecological house with four bedrooms (5 rooms according to Swiss standard) and two floors. Our plot is relatively steep, facing south-east and is located in the south of the canton of Glarus (Switzerland) at an altitude of 700m.

In short, our project can be summarized as follows:

  • A largely self-heating (passive) house with large windows on the south side and good thermal insulation.

  • The exterior walls will be solid wood with cellulose insulation and an exterior wood cladding.

  • The interior walls and floors will be made of clay.

  • We will build an eccentric gable roof with an east-west ridge and a larger south surface covered with photovoltaic panels.

  • On the west side, the kitchen will open onto a large terrace.

  • We designed an inverted house floor plan with bedrooms on the second floor and an open living kitchen on the second floor.

  • We will add a large amount of water to the insulating shells of the house to ensure a large heat storage capacity.

  • Ventilation will be provided by a "Windcowl" ( double flow chimney that creates a natural air flow in colder outdoor temperatures or driven by the wind).

  • We plan to meet the requirements of the Minergie-P-Eco standard

  • Hot water and heating (during prolonged inclement weather) will be provided by solar panels and a wood stove mass heater.

  • An anaerobic methanation system will be installed to treat compost and provide energy in the winter

  • We also plan to install an aquaponics system, rainwater recovery, and separation toilets.

It will be a partial self-build and I would like to share our experiences in this blog. I wish you a pleasant reading!
