Architect

Updated: May 29, 2023

After we purchased the plot of land, we created a document with our ideas and vision of our house. We thought about our needs and desires, as well as the technologies that we thought should be part of a modern house in order to live sustainably and comfortably. This included

  • the passive house aspect, with large south-facing windows and a large heat capacity, thanks in part to a large volume of water,

  • Heat collector for hot water,

  • photovoltaic collector for electricity production,

  • the use of buoyancy and wind for ventilation with a Windcowl,

  • aquaponics for growing vegetables and fruits,

  • some thoughts on home automation and how to implement it,

  • Separating toilets to reduce the load on the septic system and keep valuable fertilizer,

  • a large rainwater tank for toilet and aquaponics water

  • and an anaerobic methanation system to compost green waste and produce Methane. The methane gas can act as seasonal storage for energy.

We also estimate the cost of the various elements and determine how to get the most out of self-construction.

We finalized this first document at the end of summer 2021 and contacted different architects. It is not easy to find the right architect. Finally, at the end of 2021, we decided to work with Reto Fuchs, who was particularly interested in the project and with whom we had a good feeling. Working with an architect allowed us to make the project more realistic and he brought many smart and well thought-out contributions. The elaboration of the architectural project and the energy concept went then until the end of summer 2022.
